When you are a 5 feet 8inches tall woman , you are not exactly expected to have miniature feet !
Trouble however compounds when you have a solid foot size UK8 and broad wide feet. India is not exactly the country that's conducive to shopping when you have the above mentioned configuration!!!
Shoe shopping is a nightmare for me. It is either too tight or straight from the men's section. I have returned dejected from umpteen stores citing reasons," feet are too broad","feet are heavy", " why don't you try our new Men's, uhhh I mean unisex collection".
C'mon people you can't exactly octrcize me from the society for having big feet.
For the longest time I have found a loyal companion in Birkenstocks. These are slip ons that are super comfortable and come in various sizes, shapes and colours. It is like an entire spectrum of colours.
The cons of these loyal friends are that firstly these are exorbitant and cost anything from 3200-4500 Rs- not exactly pocket friendly. Secondly these are not readily available in India and you have to heavily rely on your husband's or father's trips abroad. Thirdly , residing in a place like Mumbai where it pours for half the year having shoes that are water resistant is a necessity. Birkenstocks treat your feet like a queen but can't sustain the downpour of monsoons.
That brings me to the other very popular shoes - Crocs. Don't get me wrong I love these shoes but only for my two year old. I have tried these shoes and trust me I felt like Donald Duck in these. I'm not the most fashion conscious person but I won't necessarily push myself down the fashion sucicide well.
So all the ladies who are reading the blog don't despair I have an alternate ( hopefully it is a long term solution !). I visited the flee market in Bandra West today and came across a Canadian brand called 'Native'. They pretty much have the same product - light breathable perforated water resistant plastic shoes but they look much more like converse shoes with material that's of crocs.
I tried the women's range which to my annoyance was offering Size 7 as the last size and were on the narrow side. I mean they are a Canadian company, I'm sure you know what big feet are !
Thankfully I found that they had a genuinely good unisex range. I tried pretty much the entire range and finally settled on ' Native Miller' green pair. I wore them for a while and found them to be fairly comfortable. The perforations did leave a mark but not the kind that hurts and requires immediate saline soaking treatment. I was also told that these shoes tend to widen a little with use which I felt was the clincher.
Now, Pros and cons:
Pros:
1. Good comfortable shoes that are water resistant
2. Designs are basic but something that will not make you uncomfortable
3. super easy to clean and look very sturdy; kinds that will last you good 3 years
Con's:
1. Limited choice but then again it is not something you can wear to a club or any formal setting
2. These cost me Rs.3000 where as on Amazon they cost Rs.3500. Flipkart is offering a few pairs for as low as Rs.1900. The shades are limited
3. I haven't come across any physical store , you pretty much have to rely on online portals like Amazon.in and flipkart.com
The rant I believe is fairly done for the day. I have wearing them for the last two hours and so far liking the feel. My husband who tells me that I have Man-feet gave his thumbs up when he saw these. He mentioned that my feet looked compact. Feels like maybe we have winner!
Will update in a fortnight to see if my feet are ready to form a lasting friendship with 'Native Miller' !
